Website Design History

The invention of the internet as we know it today was a long process and was aided by the revolution in computers to enable the technology to be more advanced. Years were spent trying to get computers to talk to one another and to form a network. Then internetworks were developed where computers in the same building were linked together but the files that they shared had to be of the same format. It was very difficult to get a standard in place to allow files from all areas of the world to be viewed by anyone. We all log onto the internet by some form of browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox but these were the last things to be introduced. Work had to be done on the access to files that needed to be viewed. A big step in creating the World Wide Web was taken by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Caillian who came up with the important core principles for the sharing of data. Tim Berners-Lee now heads up the World Wide Web Consortium which oversees the internet’s continued development. He developed the theory of hypertext which allowed the sharing of files. Hypertexts are now used in website design to allow the user to browse or surf files on the web with ease.

At the time of development Berners-Lee was working at the particle physics company CERN when he needed to allow users to share file. He came up with the theory that all files, or websites as they are today needed a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) so that the computer could file the location of the file. He also designed a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http) that would enable the browser and the server to send information to each other. The main component that he developed was the programming language or Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) which was to become the standard for designing web sites with. If all the sites were designed in HTML than every browser would be able to decode the page and display it correctly as long as it has been designed correctly according to the HTML rules.
